Propane / storage and survival

Propane, a versatile and widely used fuel, is essential for heating, cooking, and even lighting in various settings, from home preparedness to outdoor camping. However, its highly flammable nature requires careful handling and storage, especially in survival or tactical situations. This article provides a comprehensive overview of safely storing propane tanks, both large and small, and their potential uses, including for defense in extreme scenarios.

Storing Propane Tanks Safely

1. Ventilation is Key: Always store propane tanks outdoors in an upright position in an area that is well-ventilated. This prevents the accumulation of gas should a leak occur, reducing the risk of fire or explosion.

2. Keep Away from Living Spaces: Do not store propane tanks inside homes, garages, sheds, or other enclosed spaces. In the event of a leak, propane can build up and create a significant explosion hazard.

3. Shade and Temperature: Store tanks away from direct sunlight and in a cool, dry place. Although propane tanks are designed to handle temperature fluctuations, extreme heat can increase the pressure inside the tank, posing a risk of rupture.

4. Secure and Upright: Ensure tanks are stored securely to prevent tipping. Use containers or braces to keep them upright. Propane tanks have safety valves that are designed to operate correctly only when the tank is in an upright position.

Mobile Use of Propane

For mobile or outdoor uses, such as camping or in a bug-out vehicle, smaller propane tanks are preferred due to their portability.

1. Proper Transport: When transporting propane tanks, keep them upright and secure to prevent movement. Ensure the vehicle is well-ventilated, and remove the tanks as soon as you reach your destination.

2. Regular Inspection: Before mobile use, inspect the tank for any signs of damage, corrosion, or leaks. Use soapy water to check for leaks: apply it to the tank's connections and look for bubbles when the gas is turned on.

3. Compatible Equipment: Only use appliances designed for propane use, and ensure they are in good working order. Regularly check hoses and connections for wear and tear.

Using Propane for Defense

In extreme survival situations, propane can be used as a deterrent or defensive tool. However, this should be considered only in dire circumstances due to the inherent risks involved.

1. Creating Barriers: Propane can be used to create controlled fires to deter wildlife or unauthorized persons from entering a campsite or perimeter. This should be done with extreme caution, ensuring the fire does not spread uncontrollably.

2. Emergency Signaling: In rescue situations, a controlled propane fire can serve as a signal to rescuers. This method provides a visible signal during the day and night and can be safer and more sustainable than traditional fire methods.

3. Tactical Considerations: While the idea of using propane as an improvised explosive is often discussed in survivalist circles, it's crucial to understand the legal and ethical implications. The misuse of propane in this manner is highly dangerous, illegal, and not recommended.

But how can it it be when SHTF nothing else matters at that point for survival.

Propane is a valuable resource for survival, offering energy for heating, cooking, and lighting. However, its storage and use require strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent accidents. When used wisely and cautiously, propane can enhance your survival preparedness, providing comfort and security in challenging situations. Remember, safety is paramount; always prioritize the well-being of yourself and those around you.
